Meet Curt Wilson, Sydney North’s 2023 captain

Curt Wilson’s Nomads career started on January 22, 2017.

He remembers the date well because it was his wedding anniversary. And as any good Nomad knows, the golf course is the best place to be on your wedding anniversary.

I am still happily married by the way,’’ the 2023 Nomad Sydney North captain joked.

“Incidentally my first game as captain was on the 22 January this year. My poor wife deserves a medal.’’

Curt was introduced to Nomads Golf by a friend, Brad Carter.

Brad had played one game as a visitor and told me how good it was, so I sent a message through the Nomads website asking if they wouldn’t mind if I came along for a game as a visitor. The rest is history. I was hooked.’’

Curt an accountant – grew up in Durban, the youngest of three boys, and remembers fondly the competitive family backyard cricket matches.

I often drew the short straw, spending much of the day as wicket keeper or fielder. It was a great lesson in resilience.

I started playing golf while at University and would head down to Windsor Park Golf Club in Durban whenever I had a gap in lectures (or in some cases instead of lectures!). My handicap has tended to stay pretty constant in the low 20s. The fact that I’m an accountant helps when I’m adding up the scores. Sometimes they can be quite high.”

A self taught golfer, Curt did manage to get some tips from our new patron Peter O’Malley when he partnered POM in the Sydney North December match.

“I was happy to take on a few tips from him,’’ Curt says. It is now just a matter of putting those tips into practise! The highlight of my golfing career so far has been a third place finish in the Sydney North Jack Newton Knockout in 2019.’’

Curt loves the camaraderie that comes with being a Nomad.

Our monthly Nomads game is one of the highlights of my month and provides a forum for me to step off the hamster wheel of life and share a joke with my fellow Nomads,’’ he said.

“It is far more than that as it is through this fellowship that we are able to do the great work that we do for our charities and the furtherance of golf. Raising $73k at our charity day last year and standing up there and handing over the cheques to The McGrath Foundation and Jack Newton Junior Golf ranks right up there with my wedding day and the births of my children as one of the proudest days of my life.

I consider myself more of an administrator than a golfer and aim to bring these skills to the table as captain in 2023.

Coming off a successful charity day last year I plan to give this year as Captain a ‘red hot go!’ and see where we can take this club.
